The Tejano Music Awards were launched in 1980 to create greater awareness and appreciation for Tejano music. Selena received thirty-four awards from forty-four nominations.[4] Starting with the 21st Tejano Music Awards, a new award was added in memory of Selena called "The Selena Lifetime Achievement Award". Her brother, A.B. Quintanilla, was the first recipient. The award was presented to him by Texas Governor Rick Perry.
